Welcome back! If you are just joining us, we are using the YouVersion Bible App to follow a devotional together. Read THIS POST to get all the information you need to join in and then you can read THIS MORNING’S POST to see the promises we are focusing on this week.
Did you get a chance to spend some time with this week’s promises? It took me NO TIME to choose a verse this week. While they are all fantastic and I encourage you to spend time with all of them one of this week’s options just happens to be one of my absolute FAVORITES! Ready to see which one?
Imagine! I WANT to give you your biggest dreams when you’re trusting in Me. Psalm 37:4-5
I love, love, love this chapter of Psalms. Seriously, go read it, right now. I’ll wait.
Finished? Wonderful.
Did you catch the overwhelming amount of promises to believers in that chapter? All the things that WILL happen if we follow Him? Holy buckets. But let’s focus on the verses the devotional pulled out for us.
What are the desires of your heart? I’m not talking about the “Well, I guess it would be nice if…” or the “My life would be so much easier if….” but the true DESIRES. Those dreams that keep you up at night. The fuel in your heart and the passion in your soul. That big or small thing that drives you and you want so desperately.
Do you want to write a book? Do you wish to travel the globe? What about build your own home? Visit Africa and minister to villages? Adopt a child? Rescue hurting animals?
Whatever that deep desire is, God wants to give it to you (as long as it doesn’t go against his word, right?) when you trust in Him. Not he might, but he WILL give it to you.
I think the hardest part about this is the waiting. Have you ever noticed how there are no time frames given to these promises? “Believe in me, follow my ways, and in only six short days you will see your miracle!” Sounds like a bad infomercial, right? There’s a reason why God doesn’t give us time tables – faith! We need to believe with all our heart that God will fulfill the promises in His Word. It tells us this in verse 5, “trust in Him and He will do this.”
Maybe you are in a different boat. Maybe you don’t know what your passions are. You are so consumed with the every day (which I totally understand!) that the idea of dreaming about the future or thinking about what drives you isn’t on the to-do list. Can I encourage you to try and figure it out? A friend of mine has led groups in this exercise before and it’s always so powerful.
Take five minutes and list out everything that you love. Anything that if someone got you started talking on this topic you could go and go and go and go. That if time, money, logistics, or anything else weren’t factors you would spend your time doing, learning, teaching, what-have-you. EVERYTHING.
Now, in the group we spent time reading these passions out loud to the other people at our table but I’m guessing you are probably alone so read it out loud to yourself. Don’t just read the list, that’s too easy, but set a timer for one minute and in that minute I want you to introduce yourself and then read your passions, elaborate if you want about why these are so special to you. Feel the love for these things build up inside you as you talk about topics that are so close to your heart.
When the timer goes off read the following affirmation:
Child of God, you were created by the God of the universe specifically for this time, in this place, with these passions. You are not a mistake, you are not a coincidence. You are exactly how He intended. These things that you love were placed on your heart by Him for you to discover. He will help you grow and develop so you can pursue these passions when you follow Him. Claim His promise today.
Each time I’ve done this exercise God has spoken to me and shown me a deep rooted desire for my life that I didn’t realize I had! I didn’t think something as simple as writing down what I enjoy could have such a powerful impact.
So what are you waiting for? Discover your passions and walk in His ways so He can give you the desires of your heart. What do you have to lose?
What verse did you choose today? What is your passion or heart’s desire? Have you seen God at work to give you the desires of your heart?
