Pizza is a way of life in this house. We created the family tradition many years ago of making homemade pizza every Friday night and enjoying a movie together. Way back when there were only three of us I wasn’t making a lot of our food from scratch yet. I was still very much in the mindset of convenience over cost. We had a decent grocery budget for three people, one being a very little kid, so we could buy frozen bread dough and jarred pizza sauce to use each week.

As the family grew I realized I wanted to make our own dough so I faced my fear of making yeast dough and learned Micah’s mom’s recipe for pizza crust

We still continued to buy pizza sauce for quite some time although if you asked me why I’m not sure I could tell you. I had freezer space, so that wasn’t it. It simply wasn’t something I made from scratch at that point.

And then I did. We had bought crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce in bulk one week to make chili but our crockpot only fit half of each can. I was left with about 100oz of tomato products and a need to put them to use. I started experimenting. I added a little of this and a little of that. I started with small amounts of each seasoning so one didn’t become overwhelming and ruin the whole batch.

It’s been years since that first batch. Now we make our pizza sauce in bulk frequently and keep it in containers in the freezer. Each week we pull one out and make incredible cast iron pizzas while enjoying a film as a family.

Not only is this recipe inexpensive it’s also great for other uses. We’ve used this same sauce for meatball subs, spaghetti, pizza pasta, dip for cheese sticks, or any other recipe that calls for jarred spaghetti sauce.

This recipe is incredibly easy and you probably already have the ingredients on hand. If you don’t they aren’t hard to find! I love that I can get this going in the morning and let it simmer all day. That night you can have pizza with your fresh sauce or portion it into freezer cups for your next pizza night.
