Goose watching, homemade sushi, and oodles of kids – 5 places I found joy in the chaos this week

Every week I like to take a moment to showcase the moments that brought me the most joy. Sometimes they are awesome activities and other times it’s a sweet moment between the kids. There are always moments that can fill us with joy if we choose to see them with a thankful heart.

It was HOT this week so we needed to find some ways to stay cool but not spend all day in the a/c in front of the tv. We got creative and found some fun ways to spend our time plus we got a few things done around the house.

1. Goose watching

I took the kids to the splash pad again because it was supposed to get up to 100* on Monday. We got there early when it was still in the low 80s but the cloud cover and slight breeze was enough for the kids to not want to spend all their time getting wet. Instead they spent a good portion of their time on this bench watching the geese swim in the pond down the hill.

2. Coloring

Anders and Cade figured out how to get out their own coloring books and crayons. Sometimes this is not so great, like when it happens directly before a meal and they freak out because I want them to put it away. Other times it’s wonderful because they have found something they enjoy and can do without my instructions. This week they found a sketch notebook and it worked out great because they could each color their own picture in the same book without bumping in to the other. Perfect for twins!

3. Homemade Sushi

I was giving the younger kids a bath the other night when I hear the big boys talking about sushi ingredients. I came out to the living room to see them creating human sized sushi rolls with the memory foam mattress topper (rice), a green blanket (nori), themselves (crab or cream cheese), and pillows (veggies). I was incredibly impressed with their creativity and their memory of what they like in their sushi rolls. I was disappointed I didn’t get a good picture of the actual roll process and instead got this picture later of them wrestling in the blankets. Ah, life with kids.

4. Oodles of Kids

On Wednesday I got together with my friend Nicole (you can find her and her kids at Pieces of Our Life on YouTube) so all nine of our kids could run around and cause chaos together while we sat back and enjoyed hot coffee. Wait, eight of our kids could run around. Her six month old isn’t doing much running these days 😉 It was the perfect playdate! The kids got along, we threw together a lunch made up of leftovers from each of our fridges, and did I mention everyone got along! All five of my kids talked about their time at Nicole’s the rest of the day so I know we will be going back again soon.

5. I’m hickin’ up!

Cade ran up to me in the kitchen one day and yelled that he was “hickin up!” but I couldn’t understand what he meant until I noticed he had the hiccups. I knew I needed to capture this hilarious kidism and I’m so glad I did. It’s hard to remember all the fun and quirky terms that kids come up with when they are young and I’m thankful we live in a time where it’s so easy to capture these memories.
