A peek at our weekly grocery shopping
Each week I plan on sharing a picture of our cart at each store along with a breakdown on what we bought and what we paid. Thankfully we have zero dietary restrictions or allergies which helps us keep our budget on the low side. We try to stick between $80-90 each week for our family of seven. A lot of times what is on the menu doesn’t directly correlate to what we buy because I like to plan our meals from what we have on hand currently and use our budget to stock up on good buys plus produce and dairy products.
I split up our shopping into two days this week because there was a really great meat sale at one of the local grocery stores. I couldn’t pass up ground beef for $1.87/lb! I played with the menu and the grocery list until I was able to set aside the nearly $20 I would need to cover a 10 pound tube of ground beef. That should get us through for quite a while since we only eat a pound or two a month.
I also stumbled upon an INCREDIBLE deal at Walmart. I was looking up prices in the app while making my grocery list and found chicken nuggets listed for 0.01. Yeah, a penny. I figured it was a glitch but decided to check it out when we got to the store. It took some digging because they were buried with identical bags of chicken strips and patties. Micah hunted down a price scanner and sure enough, a penny. We grabbed six bags! It’s nice that these nuggets are actual chunks of chicken and not ground up chicken shaped into nuggets. But seriously, a penny!

Menu Plan
I love menu planning and seeing other’s dinner plans! I’m weird like that 😉 As I’ve shared before, being in the kitchen is my happy place so I love finding meals that are new but I also never forget our favorites! These will link to the author’s original recipe unless it’s my own recipe/creation that I don’t have a link for… yet.
If you need some inspiration for how to create menu plans you can read here where I go into detail about how I make a plan for our food week and here to read how I create our grocery list.
I don’t make specific plans for breakfast and lunch but these are the basics I rotate between while throwing in a few other things for special days or weeks when I have the right ingredients.
Breakfasts: Pancakes, Coffee Cake, Egg Sandwiches, Sausage Balls, Eggs (various ways), English Muffins, Banana Bread, Biscuits and Gravy, Oatmeal, and various types of muffins.
Lunches: Leftovers, PB&J, Meat and Cheese Wraps, Cheese Quesadillas, and Mac ‘n’ Cheese.
Dinners, however, are always planned for since they tend to take the most ingredients and prep time.
Here’s what’s on our menu this week:
Sunday: Club Sandwiches – I froze half the bacon strips I cooked when I made bean and bacon soup and they are simply waiting for a chance to go in these club sandwiches.
Monday: Sweet & Sour Chicken and Fried Rice – It’s been quite a while since we’ve made this family favorite. We’d been mixing it up with other varieties but this was the first type of at home Chinese take-out we ever made and it’s a winner.
Tuesday: Tomato Soup with Cheddar Bay Dumplings – We love tomato soup and we LOVE cheddar bay biscuits so this soup is bound to be a hit.
Wednesday: Taco Pizza – Why have I gone so long since making taco pizza? We love using refried beans mixed with enchilada sauce for the “sauce” of the pizza and then loading it with all our favorite taco fixings.
Thursday: Leftovers
Friday: Homemade Pizza and Movie Night – pizza crust recipe here and pizza sauce recipe here.
Saturday: Shrimp Stir Fry & Pot Stickers – We have one pound of shrimp left in the freezer after making sheet pan shrimp boil and I can’t even remember the last time we made potstickers. I’m drooling already!
